Your first physiotherapy appointment is mainly about understanding you: your concerns, your health and what you hope to achieve. Knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable.

1. A conversation

Your physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms, how and when they started, your medical history, any medications and how the problem affects your daily life. This is also a good time to share your goals.

2. A physical assessment

With your consent, the physiotherapist will look at how you move. This may include checking posture, range of movement, strength, balance and walking. You can ask questions or pause at any time.

3. Explanation and plan

Your physiotherapist will explain what they have found in clear language and discuss a suggested rehabilitation plan. Treatment and exercises may begin during this first session.

What to bring

  • Any referral letters, discharge notes, X-ray or scan reports
  • A list of current medications
  • Walking aids, braces or splints you currently use
  • Your medical insurance details, if applicable

What to wear

Wear comfortable, loose clothing that lets you move freely and allows the area being assessed to be seen, along with supportive footwear.

You are welcome to bring a family member or caregiver with you, especially if they will be helping with your recovery at home.
