Physiotherapy questions and answers
General information about physiotherapy and our services. Can’t find your answer? Contact us.
What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that helps people improve and maintain movement and physical function. Physiotherapists assess how the body moves and use approaches such as exercise, hands-on techniques, education and advice to support recovery from illness or injury and to help people manage long-term conditions.
What conditions can physiotherapy help with?
Physiotherapy may support people with a wide range of concerns, including recovery after stroke, back pain, joint pain, recovery after fractures and mobility difficulties. Whether physiotherapy is suitable for you depends on your individual situation, which is why every care plan starts with an assessment.
What happens during my first appointment?
Your first appointment usually includes a conversation about your concerns, medical history and goals, followed by a physical assessment of movement and function. Your physiotherapist will explain their findings and discuss a suggested plan with you. Please bring any relevant medical reports, a list of current medications and any walking aids you use.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
Some patients come to us with a referral from a hospital, health centre or personal doctor, and we welcome working with your medical team. If you have a referral letter or discharge notes, please bring them. Some medical insurance providers may require a referral, so check with your provider.
How long does a physiotherapy session take?
Session length can vary depending on the type of appointment and your needs. First appointments are often longer because they include a full assessment.
What should I wear to physiotherapy?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely and lets the physiotherapist see and assess the area being treated, such as shorts for knee problems or a vest top for shoulder problems. Supportive, comfortable footwear is recommended.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your condition, your goals and how you respond to treatment. After your assessment, your physiotherapist will discuss a suggested plan with you and review it regularly as you progress.
