Physiotherapists are healthcare professionals who help people improve and maintain movement and physical function. They work with people of all ages, whether recovering from an illness or injury, managing pain, or living with a long-term condition that affects how they move.

Who can physiotherapy help?

People see a physiotherapist for many reasons. Common examples include:

  • Recovery after a stroke or other neurological condition
  • Back pain, neck pain and joint pain
  • Rehabilitation after a fracture, injury or surgery
  • Difficulty walking, balancing or moving around safely
  • Wanting to become more physically active with appropriate guidance

What does a physiotherapist actually do?

Physiotherapy starts with an assessment. The physiotherapist asks about your symptoms, medical history, daily activities and goals, then examines how you move. From this, they build a plan that may include:

  • Exercise: targeted movements to support strength, flexibility, balance and endurance
  • Hands-on techniques: such as soft tissue work or joint mobilisation, where appropriate
  • Education: helping you understand your condition and what may help
  • Mobility support: advice on walking aids or wheelchair-related needs
  • Home programmes: exercises to practise between sessions

A partnership, not a quick fix

Physiotherapy works best as a partnership. Your physiotherapist provides expertise and guidance, and your active participation, including practising exercises between sessions, is often an important part of progress. Plans are reviewed regularly and adjusted as your needs change.
