When a bone breaks, the first priority is medical treatment to allow it to heal. This may involve a cast, splint, brace or surgery. Once your doctor says it is appropriate, rehabilitation can help you regain movement, strength and function.

Why rehabilitation is often needed

During healing, the injured area is usually protected and moved less. This can leave nearby joints stiff and muscles weaker. Rehabilitation aims to restore these gradually and safely.

Typical stages

  1. Early stage: protecting the healing bone while keeping other joints moving, often with guidance on walking aids
  2. Restoring movement: gentle exercises to regain joint range once permitted
  3. Strengthening: progressive exercises to rebuild muscle strength and control
  4. Returning to function: walking, balance, daily tasks, work and recreational activities

The timing of each stage depends on the fracture, the treatment received and your doctor’s guidance, including how much weight you are allowed to put through the limb.

Helping your rehabilitation go well

  • Follow your doctor’s and physiotherapist’s advice on weight-bearing
  • Bring discharge notes and X-ray reports to your first appointment
  • Practise home exercises as advised
  • Report any new or worsening pain, swelling or numbness
