Joints are where two bones meet, such as the knee, hip, shoulder, elbow or ankle. Pain or stiffness in a joint can make it harder to walk, climb stairs, reach, grip or sleep comfortably.
Common contributing factors
- Injuries such as sprains or strains
- Overuse or repetitive activities
- Age-related joint changes
- Reduced strength or flexibility in surrounding muscles
- Other health conditions, which a doctor may need to investigate
How physiotherapy may help
A physiotherapist assesses how the joint moves, the strength of the surrounding muscles and how the problem affects your daily activities. A plan may include exercises to support mobility and stability, advice on pacing activity and guidance on joint-friendly movement.
When to see a doctor promptly
A hot, red or very swollen joint, especially with fever, a joint that looks deformed, or being unable to bear weight after an injury should be assessed by a doctor promptly.
Physiotherapy can be part of the care for many joint problems, and your physiotherapist will recommend medical review when needed.
