A stroke can change the way a person moves, feels, communicates and manages daily life. Rehabilitation aims to help people regain as much function and independence as possible. Physiotherapy is often an important part of that process.

Stroke is a medical emergency. If you notice sudden face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech or confusion in someone, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Why early, structured rehabilitation matters

Rehabilitation is often started as soon as a person is medically ready, and it usually progresses in phases. A structured approach helps set clear goals, track progress and adjust the plan as needs change.

What physiotherapy may focus on

  • Mobility: moving in bed, sitting up, standing and walking
  • Balance: to support steadiness and help reduce the risk of falls
  • Strength: particularly on the side of the body affected
  • Coordination: smoother, more controlled movement
  • Functional independence: practising the everyday tasks that matter most

The role of families and caregivers

Families and caregivers are often closely involved in recovery. A physiotherapist can show them how to assist safely with movement and transfers, and how to support exercises between sessions. For some patients, home-based physiotherapy may make it easier to practise in the environment where they live.

Setting realistic expectations

Recovery after a stroke is different for everyone. Some people make significant progress, and others adapt to lasting changes. Your physiotherapist will discuss realistic, meaningful goals with you and your family and review them regularly.
